Koi Ponds for Your Colorado Springs Home

koi ponds colorado springsKoi fish are a great hobby. They are helpful for relaxation and relieving stress and are particularly fun to watch when they are eating. Although Koi will eat many natural food sources such as algae and other natural pond residents, the greatest pleasure for many Koi keepers is in feeding them. Koi are truly hogs! They look like piranhas at feeding time, churning the water, jumping and even performing like porpoises, walking along the water’s surface on their caudal fin. Koi will even swim up on lilly pads to get food that is trapped there.  Koi are very smart and can be trained to eat out of your hand. They are by nature, bottom rooting and feeding carp, but they quickly learn to eat floating dry food.

No one seems to have regrets over building a Koi pond, though some regret not making it big enough the first time around. Most people start with a 500 to 2000 gallon pond. Next thing you know, they are building another one that is 10,000 to 50,000 gallons because they simply want more Koi. There are hundreds of color combinations and varieties and after people have Koi for awhile they tend to want more and more varieties.

Koi ponds should be at least 4 feet deep because that keeps out a lot of raccoons who love the taste of Koi. If you have Great Blue Herons or Kingfishers, you might want to consider making your Koi pond 8 feet deep to keep these birds from capturing your beautiful Koi.

The cost of feeding Koi is very reasonable, at $1.00 – $2.00 per pound. You might want to experiment with floating feeding rings. The Koi learn to hang out underneath the ring, so you will see them waiting for food!
